8 Ways To Tell If You’re Truly Soul-Aligned

Keeping your soul aligned is hugely important if you want to succeed in life.

Take Marie Forleo. She’s on a mission to help you become the person you most want to be. She’s a two times published author, has an award-winning show and a media empire that reaches millions. She’s what you might call a power coach and she does it all with a smile.

But it wasn’t always that way for her.

She started out working on Wall Street. She believed the money and the pace was what she wanted. The job status kept her parents happy, which made her feel good about herself. Starting to sound familiar?

It wasn’t long before those early corporate jobs didn’t light her up. She knew there had to be more.

Something isn’t right. You know there’s more to life. You feel uncomfortable knowing you have so much unrealised potential. That’s when you’re not in alignment with your soul’s purpose and if you want to be truly happy and perform effortlessly at your optimum you need to address it. 

Here’s 8 ways to tell if you’re living in alignment with your soul....


Are you feeling sluggish all the time? Is life a constant battle to see how much caffeine you can drink? It’s true, lack of energy can come from poor nutrition or needing rest. But when feeling sluggish is part of your daily routine you should probably consider the reasons why. That exhaustion can come from working against your soul’s purpose. As Mark Goulston says in Get Out Of Your Own Way “Self-defeating behaviour occurs when we fail to learn the lessons that life tries to teach us”.

💫 Soul-Aligned Action: Slow down, ditch the energy kicks and tune in to how you’re feeling underneath it all. 


Stress can be good. It can help you rise to the challenge. If it helps move you to action, makes your life worthwhile and  keeps you productive that’s great. However there’s another kind of stress. The kind that causes anxiety, fatigue and depression. Instead of helping you achieve your goals, it blocks you from success and happiness. It can even lead to emotional, mental and  physical sickness. According to research from Dr Glenn Fox, successful people are the ones able to reframe their stress.

💫 Soul-Aligned Action: If you frame a challenging situation as an exciting opportunity you’ll bring your best self and enjoy the challenge.


Imagine standing by the side of a stream. If you build a dam to block the flow of water, the water collects and starts to put pressure on the dam you’ve built. No matter how big the dam is, the pressure of the water will eventually build up and collapse the dam, causing all sorts of damage to your construction. Life run’s on the same principle. It doesn’t matter whether it’s water or another form of energy, everything must flow.

Resisting that flow in any area of your life means you’re fighting against a particular outcome, which shows you’re living in fear. It’s even the same with something as simple as asking for help. It’s fine to give help but you have to be open to receiving help, whether it’s asked for and even when it’s not. As Angela Cecilia says in her book Follow Your Bliss - “You can't expect to move forward if your emergency brake is on”.

💫 Soul-Aligned Action: Remind yourself life doesn’t need to be a struggle. When you’re in flow you enjoy everything you do.


What makes you happy or excited? What are the things you’d stay up all night to do even if you weren’t being paid for it? If you were to write all those things down on a “Happy List” it should include a whole variety of activities. Anything from looking out the window at the moon while eating a bar of chocolate all the way to holidays hanging out with your best friends at a luxury spa hotel in the Maldives. What’s on your list is unique to you and there’s no right or wrong.

💫 Soul-Aligned Action: Do activities from your Happy List as often as possible. Even the smallest ones can make a big difference.


Rachel Foy talks about this in her book The Hungry Soul. A hungry soul is one that is never satisfied no matter how much you feed it. The food here is symbolic, it doesn’t have to be something you eat. You could be trying to feed your soul with shopping, exercise, drink, gambling or anything else that gives an immediate hit of feeling better. Sure you’ll feel great initially but quickly those feelings will turn to guilt and  shame. No matter how much you feed yourself you’ll never achieve long term satisfaction. The point is that you have a belief you’ll be happy when you hit a certain target. 100 pairs of shoes perhaps or when you have a body like Bella Hadid. The feeding is a coping mechanism covering up what you really need.

💫 Soul-Aligned Action: Notice if you’re placing your happiness on something external from you. That’s a definite sign you’re suffering from hungry soul syndrome.


Do you have a constant feeling of anxiety? A continual knot in your stomach or a cloud of fear hanging over you? It’s only human to feel this for short periods but long term this is a sign that something’s not right. It’s often the case that when people have a job that isn’t right for them they feel like that.

For instance, imagine if you had family pressure to become a lawyer, a job your parents could be proud of. Sure it would give you status and a good salary to pay the bills. But the long hours, questionable morals and  stiff atmosphere might go against everything you believe in. That’s exactly the kind of environment that could cause underlying anxiety. Maybe instead of law you wanted to help and guide people, then something like coaching would have been a better match. On the surface coaching might not impress your parents as much but doing something you love means you can rise to the top of your profession.

💫 Soul-Aligned Action: Remember....

In an interview with Lewis Howes, Kyle Cease leans over and asks Lewis what’s recently triggered him. Lewis replies, people writing things about his personal life makes him feel abused. As Kyle starts to ask why Lewis realises the feeling of abuse isn’t from anyone external. It’s coming from within himself. The power of blaming others means his ego’s been able to avoid him confronting his inner child. The problem is the inner child is reacting based on old beliefs. It can sabotage you and  you don’t even know it. All the time you’re focused on how abusive or manipulative other people are but you’re not paying attention to the fact the pain is coming from deep within yourself. Your inner child is keeping you out of alignment.

There’s some fascinating research from The HeartMath Institute, which confirms what spiritual people have known for thousands of years. It confirms your heart makes decisions before your head, up to a whole second or more in fact. The heart sends signals to your mind, which then pass to you for decision making. Unfortunately the mind can become clouded by ego, existing beliefs and emotions. If you want to be in alignment you need to follow your heart, not your head.

How does this work in practice? It means if you find yourself excited and filled with passion at the thought of something, like working for yourself, then that’s exactly what you should do. Of course thoughts will follow like questioning how will you pay the bills? Can you live with the uncertainty of working for yourself? Those thoughts are your ego trying to keep you small and  hold you back. The ego thinks it’s doing a good job by keeping you safe. But if you listen to those thoughts you won’t be able to align with your true purpose.

💫 Soul-Aligned Action: Follow your passions and what lights you up otherwise you’ll never feel aligned with your soul.


As you can see, your soul can so easily be out of alignment and in so many ways.

While it’s possible to live productively with some or even all of the above it isn’t possible to do it forever. By addressing the warning signs above, like tuning in to your heart, talking to your inner child and feeding your hungry soul you can not only turn your productivity all the way up but you can do it with a smile and loving life.
